Small business website redesign checklist

5 Signs Your Small Business Website Needs a Redesign

Most small business websites don’t fail all at once. They slowly stop working — leads dry up, the design starts looking dated, and at some point you stop mentioning your own website because you’re not proud of it anymore.

If any of that sounds familiar, it’s probably time for a redesign. Here are five signs that make it clear.

1. It Looks Like It Was Built Five Years Ago

Design trends move fast, and an outdated site signals the same thing to potential customers whether it’s fair or not: that your business isn’t current, isn’t invested, or isn’t paying attention to detail.

This doesn’t mean chasing every design trend. It means your site should look intentional — clean typography, proper spacing, a layout that feels modern. If your homepage still has stock photos of people shaking hands, gradient buttons from 2015, or a font that looks like it came with Windows XP, visitors are forming a first impression you don’t want them to form.

A well-designed site builds trust before a single word is read. An outdated one undermines it before the page even loads.

2. It Doesn’t Work Properly on Mobile

Google indexes the mobile version of your site first when determining search rankings. If your site breaks on a phone — text overflows, buttons are too small to tap, or the layout stacks in the wrong order — you’re losing both rankings and customers.

Pull up your site on your phone and navigate through it like a customer would. If anything feels frustrating or looks broken, that’s a problem. Mobile isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the primary way most of your customers are finding you.

3. It Loads Slowly

Visitors don’t wait. A site that takes more than three seconds to load loses a significant portion of its traffic before anyone reads a single word. And beyond the user experience, Google uses page speed as a ranking factor — so a slow site hurts your visibility too.

Slow load times usually come from one of a few places: unoptimized images, cheap or overcrowded hosting, too many plugins running at once, or no caching layer in place. Sometimes these can be fixed without a full rebuild. Other times — especially on older sites running on shared hosting with a bloated plugin stack — starting fresh on better infrastructure is the faster path.

You can check your current speed for free at Google PageSpeed Insights. Anything below 70 on mobile is worth addressing.

4. You’ve Stopped Updating It

If updating your website feels like a project — something that requires finding login credentials, calling someone, or setting aside a full afternoon — you’re not going to do it regularly. And a site that doesn’t get updated starts to decay.

Outdated services, old pricing, a contact form that nobody checked in months, blog posts from three years ago — these all signal to visitors that the site isn’t an active part of your business. And in some cases, they signal it to Google too.

A redesign isn’t just about how the site looks. It’s about building something you can actually maintain. A well-built WordPress site with the right setup makes updates fast and straightforward. MellowMeta also offers a Content Maintenance add-on for clients who’d rather just send a message and have it handled.

5. It’s Not Generating Any Leads

This is the clearest sign of all. A website is a business tool. If it’s not generating calls, contact form submissions, or inquiries of any kind, something is wrong — whether that’s the design, the messaging, the SEO, or all three.

A good website does a specific job: it takes someone who found you online and gives them enough reason to reach out. If yours isn’t doing that, it doesn’t matter how much you spent on it or how long ago it was built. It’s not working.

Before assuming the problem is traffic, check the basics first. Is there a clear call to action on every page? Is your phone number visible without scrolling? Does the homepage explain what you do in the first five seconds? If the answer to any of those is no, you’ve found your problem.

What a Redesign Actually Involves

A redesign doesn’t always mean starting from scratch, but it often does — especially if the existing site is on a platform like Wix or Squarespace where the design and infrastructure are tied together. Moving to WordPress gives you full ownership of the site and a foundation that can grow with the business.

At MellowMeta, web design packages start at $250 and include managed hosting. If your current site has one or more of the issues above and you’re ready to fix it properly, reach out and we’ll figure out what makes sense for your situation.
